Donna was originally established as a railroad station in 1904 by the St. Louis Brownsville & Mexico Railway Company and later incorporated in 1909. It quickly became popular with Mexican immigrants who came to work in the surrounding cotton fields, which remain important to the city’s economy today. Donna is now home to a variety of businesses, including numerous grocery stores and restaurants, auto parts and repair shops, pharmacies, auto dealerships and other retail outlets. The city also hosts several annual festivals that celebrate its cultural heritage and vibrance.
The downtown area of Donna offers many attractions that appeal to both locals and tourists alike. Visitors can explore Old Town Plaza Park where they’ll find a bandstand with live music performances every weekend or take part in walking tours of historical sites such as the old train station or Lopez Theater. The plaza itself features several sculptures that commemorate important community events and individuals such as “Dignidad Fronteriza” that honors the thousands of deported immigrants from Mexico who worked on local farms or “El Corazon de Donna” which depicts the heart-warming embrace between two friends embracing each other during times of hardship.
In addition to its cultural attractions, Donna also boasts one of the best education systems in Hidalgo County with five elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and one alternative school all sharing campuses within walking distance from each other. There are also three private elementary/middle schools located within Donna’s borders providing further educational opportunities for those living within the city limits. The University Learning Center is another place where citizens can further their education by taking classes at South Texas College right here in Donna!
